Abstract · This article examines the ethnic composition and demographic development of the population of Irevan from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. It evaluates historical narratives concerning the city by drawing on chronicles, travel accounts, Ottoman taxation registers, cameral censuses, statistical reports and annually published calendars. The sources examined by the authors indicate that the indigenous population of Irevan was predominantly composed of Azerbaijani Turks. The study relates major demographic fluctuations to the Safavid–Ottoman wars, political instability, population displacement, deportation and violence. On this basis, the article reconstructs the changing ethnic and demographic profile of the city.
